WHAT IS HEMATOLOGY & ONCOLOGY
Hematology and medical oncology are specialties of internal medicine that focus on cancer and blood disorders. Hematologists and Oncologists are the doctors that diagnose and treat these diseases.
Hematology is the study of diseases or disorders of the blood. The diseases can be cancers of the blood, such as leukemia, lymphoma and myeloma, or the diseases can be non-cancerous disorders, such as abnormalities of the red blood cells, white blood cells and platelets. In addition, hematology also deals with bleeding and clotting problems.
Oncology focuses on cancers in the rest of the body, which are called solid tumors. Solid tumors can occur in any organ of the body, such as the lungs, breasts, or bowel. Like hematologists, oncologists can diagnose and treat cancers of the blood system.
Even though these specialties may have similarities, there are many differences in the wide variety of treatments available. At Hematology & Oncology Consultants, P.C., our physicians and staff can provide comprehensive, up-to-date care for both specialties.
